Naxos Sites & Attractions
While staying at the Irene I Pension and Irene II Pension Apartments and Studios in Naxos Town (Chora), we suggest visiting some of the splendid sites in Naxos Town. Get a good map of Naxos and start out with a visit to the Portara - the Gate to the Temple of Apollo, the sanctuary of Dionysus, the Mycenaean Settlement and the Castle built in the Frankish Era.
It is also worthwhile visiting sites in other areas of Naxos Island, such as:
- the Kouros of Apollo in Apollonas
- the 17 th century Zevgoli Castle, the abandoned windmills and the wonderful museums in Apiranthos
- the towers, the windmills and the Sanctuaries of Apollo & Demetra in Sagri
- the Mycenaean Tomb remains in Eggares
- the old emery mines in Koronos
- the Byzantine churches and the Frnakish Towers in Tragea
- The exquisite Cave of Za in Filoti
Naxos Beaches
Sunbathing and swimming on Naxos beaches is a relaxing and pleasant experience. As you can see on your map of Naxos, there are an abundance of beaches and coves to choose from. Near Naxos Town we recommend the fantastic beaches of Agia Anna, Agios Georgios (St. George), Agios Prokopios and Plaka. Windsurfers frequent the beaches of Mikri Vigla, Orkos and Alykos. If you would rather soak up the sun rays on a quieter beach, you can go to Apollonas, Moutsouna and Lionas on the eastern coast, or Panormos, Kastraki, Agiassos and Pyrgaki on the southern coast.
